California Gavin Newsom It seems like he’s been running for president for months, today he made it a little more official.
“Yes, otherwise I would lie,” the two-term Democrat said. CBS Sunday morningIt’s Robert Costa on what he “thought seriously” about a run for the White House. “I would just be lying, and I don’t, I can’t do that,” Newsom added in a pre-recorded interview broadcast today.
However, after testing the waters in the Red States for months and taking action on donald trump On all available platforms, Newsom issued the warning that he would not make a decision on 2028 until the 2026 midterm elections were over. After that vote, in which Democrats could regain control of the House of Representatives and, less likely, the Senate, the game is on.
“I’m looking forward to who’s running in 2028 and who’s running then, and that’s the question for the American people,” Hollywood Newsom said of fellow Democrats seeking the big job, which could include his fellow Californian and former vice president. Kamala Harriswho was the 2024 candidate.
Additionally, the term-limited governor who will leave office in Sacramento after the midterm elections also warns that Trump’s second term and a currently unconstitutional third term are at stake in next year’s vote. “His presidency, de facto, ends next November, if we are successful… his presidency is de facto over as we know it today, the fire and the fury maybe means something. But ultimately, this system has been rebalanced,” Newsom told CBS News, led by Bari Weiss.
“If we have a President Johnson, we may have a third term of President Trump.”
After Trump fought most of this year on a variety of fronts, Newsom has put much of his own political capital on the line with California’s redistricting measure, Proposition 50. The only thing on the ballot for next month’s election in the Golden State, Proposition 50 opposing Arnold Schwarzenegger, would be Temporarily alter California’s electoral districts to favor Democrats. The measure, which appears likely to pass, is a response to Trump’s desired gerrymandering efforts in red states like Texas to ensure a Republican majority in Congress in 2026 by eliminating Democratic-majority districts.
Once known for his own efforts to achieve a kind of detente with the authoritarian Trump in his first term and the first weeks of his return to power, Newsom now calls the former Apprentice harbor “an invasive species for California, for the country, for the world.”
Noting the sudden demolition of the East Wing of the White House last week to make room for Trump’s new ballroom funded by $300 million in corporate donations, the Governor said POTUS is “a wrecking ball, not just the symbolism and substance of the East Wing. He is destroying alliances, truth, trust, tradition and institutions.”
Of course, the timing of today’s interview, as Trump struts onto the world stage this weekend at a summit in Asia, is intended to send a message to the White House. In terms of timing, the recording of the Oct. 23 meeting with Newsom came just before Trump announced he was reversing course on sending troops to San Francisco as he had done to Los Angeles early last summer — a Marine and National Guard presence that led to months of eventually successful court challenges by Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Nice.
As for the possible next step in his own political battles, Newsom said that, in his opinion, any presidential candidate needs “a compelling why,” possibly a missive addressed to any fellow Democrats thinking about throwing their hat in the ring.
“I think the biggest challenge for anyone running for any office is having people see through you,” Newsom noted on CBS Sunday Morning, if not, why you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
