The US president refused to confirm reports that the planned meeting in Budapest had been put on hold.
US President Donald Trump has said his possible summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest should not go ahead. “Lost time.”
Trump made the comment on Tuesday after US media reported that the meeting in Budapest, agreed to last week during a Putin-Trump phone call, had been called off.
“I don’t want to miss a meeting, I don’t want to waste time, so I’ll see what happens.” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
A reporter then asked the president why he thought the meeting “It could be a waste of time.”
Trump responded: “I didn’t say it would happen. You never know what’s going to happen. There’s a lot going on on the war front with Ukraine and Russia. We’ll update you over the next two days about what we’re doing.”He did not say whether the event had been canceled or postponed.
Putin and Trump held a rare in-person meeting in Alaska in August. Although no progress was made, both sides described it as a positive step towards peace in Ukraine and the restoration of bilateral relations.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone on Monday and discussed ways to “collaborate to promote a lasting solution to the war between Russia and Ukraine.” according to the State Department.
