“It’s wrong”: Republican senator criticizes Trump’s new measures as “similar to what Iran does”

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) harshly criticized the Triumph On Sunday, the Trump administration over its ongoing military strikes against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean, calling them “extrajudicial executions” that it said were similar to the way the Iranian and Chinese governments operate.

“The war on drugs or crime has typically been something we do through law enforcement, and until now they have alleged that these people are drug dealers,” Paul said, appearing on fox news Sunday.

“No one has said their name, no one has said what evidence, no one has said if they are armed and we have not presented any evidence. So at this point, I would call them extrajudicial killings. This is similar to what Porcelain does, to what Iran “Drug dealers summarily execute people without presenting evidence to the public, so it’s wrong.”

President Donald Trump has authorized at least ten strikes against maritime vessels suspected of transporting drugs since September, killing at least 43 people who his administration has described as “narcoterrorists.” The attacks have received widespread bipartisan condemnation as a possible violation of international law, with the most recent strike It occurred from Thursday night to Friday morning and killed six.

Trump’s authority to authorize the attacks has also been questioned by critics, who point to Congress’s exclusive authority to approve declarations of war. Congress has not approved the attacks and, according to Paul, has not even been informed about the operations or the evidence (if any) that the targets were actually involved in drug trafficking.

“We have not had a briefing, to be clear, we have not received any briefing, I have not been invited to any briefing, but a briefing is not enough to overcome the Constitution,” Paul said. “The Constitution says that when you go to war, Congress has to vote on it, and during a war, there are stricter rules for participation and sometimes people die without due process.”
