Like the discourse around AI in Hollywood continues to intensify, guillermo del toro is planting its feet in opposition to the cinematic trend.
The three-time Oscar winner recently said he would “rather die” than consume Generative AI in his films, comparing technology to the “arrogance” of Oscar IsaacThe titular mad scientist in his netflix Mary Shelley adaptation frankenstein.
“AI, particularly generative AI, does not interest me and never will interest me,” he said in an interview with NPR. “I’m 61 years old and I hope I have no interest in using it until I die… The other day, someone emailed me and said, ‘What is your position on AI?’ And my answer was very brief. I said, ‘I’d rather die.'”
Del Toro explained that his “concern is not artificial intelligence, but natural stupidity,” adding, “I think that’s what drives most of the world’s worst features.”
He frankenstein The writer and director noted that he related his adaptation of the eponymous role “in a way to tech bros. It’s a bit blind, it creates something without considering the consequences and I think we have to take a break and consider where we’re going.”
Del Toro’s latest interview comes after he previously stated “fuck AI!” during a screening of frankenstein last week in New York City.
