Donald Trump announced a new higher tariff rate for Canada on Saturday after airing an ad that used Ronald Reagan’s words against the current president.
The president has been furious for days about the ad, which echoes Reagan’s words about the dangers of imposing too many tariffs on other countries.
Now he is imposing real consequences.
“Canada was caught, red-handed, placing a fraudulent ad in Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” Trump said. “The Reagan Foundation said it ‘created an advertising campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan. The ad misrepresents the presidential radio address’ and ‘did not seek or receive permission to use and edit the comments. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter.'” “The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court “United States come to their ‘rescue’ over the tariffs they have used for years to harm the United States.”
Trump then added: “Now the United States can defend itself against high and pervasive Canadian tariffs (and those of the rest of the world too!).”
“Ronald Reagan loved tariffs for national security and economic reasons, but Canada said no! His ad was going to be pulled IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing it was a FRAUD,” he further stated. “Due to your gross misrepresentation of facts and your hostile act, I am raising the tariff to Canada by 10% above what you are paying now. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
