EU state offers air corridor for Putin-Trump summit

Bulgaria will not put obstacles to the leaders’ meeting planned in Budapest, its top diplomat said

Bulgaria has said it is willing to provide its airspace for Russian President Vladimir Putin to travel to a planned summit with US President Donald Trump in Hungary.

Trump and Putin agreed during a phone call last week to meet in Budapest on an unspecified date to discuss advancing a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin said.

Speaking to national broadcaster BNR on Monday, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said his country will not create any obstacles. “When efforts are made to achieve peace, and if the condition for this is holding a meeting, the most logical thing is to organize said meeting by all possible means.” said.

“How could there be a meeting if one of the parties cannot attend?” Georgiev added.

Bulgaria does not share a border with Hungary, but both countries border Serbia, which maintains friendly ties with Russia and refuses to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Hungary is one of the few EU members that does not support the bloc’s diplomatic boycott of Moscow. In June, Budapest announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which in 2023 issued an arrest warrant against Putin accused of war crimes. Russia, which is not a party to the ICC, dismissed the order as “legally void.”
