‘It’s not a joke’: Internet horrified as Trump orders higher tariffs because Canada ‘makes him sad’

Published on

Donald Trump announced higher tariff rates for Canada on Saturday, specifically due to an anti-tariff ad that used Ronald Reagan’s own words, sparking outrage from observers.

The president has been furious for days about the ad, which echoes Reagan’s words about the dangers of imposing too many trade barriers on other countries. Then Trump imposed real consequences over the weekend.

“Canada was caught, red-handed, placing a fraudulent ad in Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” Trump said. “The Reagan Foundation said it ‘created an advertising campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan. The ad misrepresents the presidential radio address’ and ‘did not seek or receive permission to use and edit the comments. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter.'” “The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court “United States come to their ‘rescue’ over the tariffs they have used for years to harm the United States.”

He then announced a 10% increase in tariffs for Canada.

That didn’t sit well with viewers, including White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg, who said: “Let’s be clear about what this is. “Canada is not paying anything.”

“He’s raising taxes on Americans by executive fiat because he didn’t like an ad that cited Reagan’s (accurate) views on tariffs,” he later added. “You (and I) pay these taxes, not Canada.”

MeidasTouch chimed in: “Trump says he’s raising tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by 10% because the Ontario commercial that accurately used Ronald Reagan’s words about tariffs made him sad.”

Economist Justin Wolfers said: ““He got 10% dumber.”

“It’s not a joke: Trump just imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on Canada because he still doesn’t understand that Reagan was a passionate free trader,” he later added.

tax analyst Erica York said: ““The president should not have the power to arbitrarily impose tariffs.”

“Is the new 10% tariff on imports from Canada related to the fentanyl emergency or the reciprocal trade emergency or are hurt feelings now a national emergency too?” he further added.
